WHEAT growers have voted to normalise AWB Limited's constitution.
The move to adjourn the meeting two weeks ago paid dividends for the board, with another 8700 votes cast to take the ballot to 77 per cent.
AWB chairman Brendan Stewart said it had been a historic day for the company.
"This is a vote about the future, not about the past," Mr Stewart said.
"The result is overwhelming.
"The difficulty in getting a 75 per cent pass rate on any resolution and certainly one as critical as this, is never easy."
Mr Stewart said the company would now redeem the A-class shares to leave only the listed shares in the company.
A meeting to vote on a new constitution was most likely to occur in late October.
Warracknabeal grower Marshall Rodda supported the move to a new constitution.
"It had to happen to move the company forward to allow it to compete with the opposition," Mr Rodda said.
"There needs to be a level playing field."
Wheat Growers Association chairman Bob Iffla said after the meeting he was disappointed with the result.
"I hope that down the track that people do remember what happened today," Mr Iffla said.
"It's a sad day for Australia."
