THE best sponge, scone and shortbread bakers from across Victoria went head to head at the Royal Melbourne Show as the cookery judging wrapped up.
Thousands of breads, slices, sauces, biscuits, cakes and breads were scrutinised by expert judges over two days to determine the best in show.
A record number of entries poured in this year, Royal Melbourne Show art, craft and cookery organising committee chair Robyn Johnson said.
"Our entries in cookery, arts and crafts were up by about 300 this year, totalling more than 3300 entries,'' Ms Johnson said.
"Showing is about always striving to a better standard.
"I think it gets in your blood too.
"People get hooked when entering for the first time, especially if they get a prize.''
