THE Victorian Government holds the key to a review of the move to end Exceptional Circumstances support for farmers in central and East Gippsland.
National Rural Advisory Council chairman Keith Perrett said NRAC had received new information on rainfall and soil conditions from local sources through the Victorian Farmers Federation.
"But we need a formal application from the State Government making out the case for a review of our earlier decision," Mr Perrett said.
"If what's put to us stacks up we'll initiate a review, including a quick visit."
But a spokesman for Victorian Agriculture Minister Joe Helper said Victoria's original submission for extending the regions' support provided "more than enough information" to show there was no sustained recovery through parts of Gippsland.
It had been backed by more recent VFF data, he said.
"We've also recommended to the Commonwealth that before EC is removed from any part of the state that they visit that particular region, which did not happen in this instance."
VFF president Simon Ramsay said his understanding was a new submission was not required to initiate a review.
"We thought we'd provided enough new information to NRAC for them to have a re-think."
He said the VFF had recommended treating the McAlister Irrigation District differently from the rest of the region.
NRAC recently recommended EC support for the Gippsland regions not be extended beyond the end of this month.
The assessment was based on a "desk top" analysis of official rainfall and other relevant data.
