MALCOLM Turnbull has put his stamp on the federal Liberal leadership by elevating youthful allies to his front bench and leaving Howard-era figures on the outer.

Deputy leader Julie Bishop secured the Treasury portfolio in Mr Turnbull's new opposition line-up, leading an economic team which includes Andrew Robb and Joe Hockey.

As well as focusing on economic management Mr Turnbull also signalled a renewed emphasis on the environment  after a period of mixed messages under predecessor Brendan Nelson.

Among key Turnbull supporters elevated, Michael Keenan was given employment and workplace relations, Peter Dutton takes over health and Christopher Pyne education.

Environment spokesman Greg Hunt's role has been expanded and Mr Robb will assist Mr Turnbull in formulating the opposition's emissions trading design.

Key Nelson backer Nick Minchin has been downgraded from defence to communications and former Howard lieutenant Tony Abbott finds himself in the welfare and indigenous affairs portfolio he was hoping to leave.
