IT'S hard enough trying to fatten, train and scrub up a healthy, young steer even if you are full-sighted.
But Shane, who was showing his animal at this year's Royal Melbourne Show, said he enjoyed the challenge.
"It's tricky but it's also lots of fun,'' Shane said.
Declared legally blind at 15, Shane and three of his classmates have been working hard to get their 13-month-old steer, Jeff, ready for the Show.
"We had to make sure he was tame enough to lead, and then wash him up for the big day,'' Shane said.
Jeff was entered in the parade and beef carcass competition.
"I think he could go all right,'' Shane said. "He's a good steer.''
Kerang Technical High School teacher Justin Colville said Jeff was one of several animals the school entered for the Show.
All 12 students in Year 12 had been involved in preparing them, he said.
"I really enjoy seeing the students parade the animals out in the ring,'' Justin said.
"Shane does an amazing job. He somehow manages to lead the animal with a great deal of confidence.''
