HE'S a real ham, loves the camera and is famous around the world.

But there are fears the celebrity status of big Bruce the pig could be cut short today, with the pesky porker facing the prospect of being processed into sausages, bacon and chops, the Gold Coast Bulletin reports.

Bruce made headlines around the globe after leading a porcine reign of terror in the tiny northern NSW town of Uki.

Things came to a head yesterday when he bailed up 63-year-old Carolyn Hayes in her home about 4am as she tried to make her way to her outhouse.

Ms Hayes said she spent a terrifying two hours trapped in her home, during which the stray pig - which she had previously befriended and named Bruce - snapped a broom and featherduster with his mouth, knocked over garden ornaments and head-butted her front door as she tried in to scare him from the property.

News of the greatest pig star since Babe quickly spread across Australia, then around the world, even being picked up by the website of the venerable English newspaper The Times.

Sky News, also in the UK, screamed 'Giant Pig Holds Oz Woman Hostage'.

Chowan Creek residents first noticed the one-year-old male pig about four weeks ago when he wandered out of nearby bushland and began digging up their gardens.

Fearing he had been abandoned by his owner, they began feeding Bruce to the point where he is the size of a small Shetland pony.

Though she had heard reports of a stray pig in the area, Ms Hayes said she only came across Bruce about two weeks ago when she found him sniffing at her front door.

"Never in my 35 years on my property have I had a big pig arrive," she said.
