BALLARAT is baring all in an unusual exhibition that showcases 200 years of the naked human body.

The Naked and the Nude exhibition is Ballarat's largest ever. Ballarat Fine Art Gallery director Gordon Morrison says it rates amongst the top two or three exhibitions ever displayed in Ballarat.

"We have an incredible line-up of nude paintings and sculptures, dating back to the 1880s," Gordon says.

"We have teamed up the important nudes from our permanent exhibition with works sourced from around the country."

Gordon says The Naked and the Nude is an ambitious exhibition, but it has proved very successful since its opening on September 13.

"My favourite nude piece changes constantly, but at the moment Australian artist Kaynor Hoff's marble sculpture of the female figure has drawn my attention," Gordon says.

"The collection is not just paintings; it is three-dimensional."

Being completely surrounded by wall-to-wall nudes is something Gordon says is an amazing feeling.

"It's almost spooky," he says.

Although the exhibition focuses on Australian paintings, drawings and sculptures, there are also a number of European images.

The Naked and the Nude exhibition runs until December 7.
