THE first hatchings of locusts have been reported in the Riverina district of Temora, ABC News reports.
The Plague Locust Commission expects hatchings over a wide area of central and southern NSW after egg laying in autumn.
Earlier this month, the Victorian Department of Primary Industries warned that a locust plague in the irrigation areas of Victoria would be a further blow to properties already suffering the impact of the prolonged drought and the prospect of low water supplies next summer.
ABC News said the Plague Locust Commission is expecting hatchings over a wide area of central and southern New South Wales after egg laying in autumn.
Combaning farmer Rachel Schliebs says she saw thousands of young locusts on Friday.
"I just heard this noise at about 3:00 in the afternoon on the ground and looked down and here's these locusts," she told ABC News.
"They're just everywhere, there was quite a widespread hatching."
Land holders must report locust hatchings to their nearest rural lands protection board.
