In a move that will have the die-hards reeling over their baking trays, sponge cake made from a packet mix will be allowed at this year's Horsham Show.

The plan may be half-baked, but it's an attempt by organisers of the Home, Craft and Ladies' Pavilion at this year's show to boost entries, ABC Rural reports.

Organisers are so concerned about a gradual drop in sponge entries, they've bucked tradition and taken the dramatic step of allowing cakes made from packet mixes to be entered in competition.

Chief steward Jill Wilson told the ABC that allowing packet mixes is an attempt to attract younger cooks, and more ideas are being looked at for next year.

"Maybe we need to do some more modern type cooking, but I don't know what people do" she says.

"They think well maybe I'm not good enough for the show. But they may be surprised if they just made a few biscuits and made a cake and entered it in."
