GIRL Guides in South Australia is struggling to attract leaders.

Girls wanting to join the guides are being turned away due to a desperate shortage of leaders.

Girl Guides state commissioner Margie Berlemon said the shortage of leaders was becoming critical for some units.

Mrs Berlemone said some units were finding it difficult to continue operating.

"It's a huge dilemma because we've no shortage of girls wanting to join," Mrs Berlemon said.

"Finding volunteers is a serious issue across Australia."

A survey by Guides found more than half of volunteers were aged over 35 and a quarter of those were over 55.

Many were Guides as children.

The survey also showed that volunteers spent more than nine hours a week working with the organisation.

Girl Guides SA will begin a television advertising campaign this month in a bid to recruit more volunteers.
