THE Bogong High Plains road, which runs from Falls Creek to Anglers Rest, Victoria, reopened last week after being closed for winter.
And Geoff Lacey reports that the Mt Beauty Pondage is high and fishing is excellent for rainbow trout, with 500g specimens being taken on worms, lures and size 10 and 12 weighted nymphs, all fished near the bottom.
In the upper Kiewa River from Mt Beauty to Mongans Bridge, pan-size brown trout and rainbow trout to 450g are being caught on worms and lures.
The east Kiewa River at Bogong Village is flowing nicely and producing brown trout to 400g, and Rocky Valley Creek at Bogong Village is producing brown trout to 450g.
Upper Mitta Mitta River from Sunnyside to Anglers Rest is running high and fast. creating ideal conditions for bait and lure fishing. Fly fishers are also getting a few brown trout on wet flies and nymphs.
Fly fishers have been catching good numbers of brown trout in the lower Mitta Mitta River from Mitta Mitta to Eskdale
Mick Hall at Eildon reports anglers trolling scrubworms behind Ford Fender attractors are catching brown trout to 2.75kg from Jerusalem Creek and Big River Arm at Lake Eildon.
Pink Tassie Devils are also working.
Anglers trolling lures near the main wall are catching yellowbelly to 45cm.
Eildon Pondage is full of trout and anglers are catching them to 4kg on lures, Powerbait and the local dough mix.
In the Western District, Doug Lucas says Lake Bullen Merri has brown trout to 3.2kg, Chinook salmon to 2.5kg and rainbow trout to 2kg.
Bank anglers are doing best using Powerbait, scrubworms and gudgeon.
Anglers spinning from the shore at Lake Purrumbete are catching rainbow trout to 1.5kg.
Lake Elingamite has been steady for brown and rainbow trout to 2.5kg and redfin to 1kg on hard-bodied lures.
Curdies River has good numbers of bream to 38cm, caught on shrimp and vibe lures.
Aire River is producing the same size bream on shrimp.
In the Gellibrand River, estuary perch are being caught on hard-bodied lures, and bream to 38cm are taking lures and shrimp baits.
Clifton, Princetown and Aire River beaches are producing salmon to 1.5 kg, but averaging 800-900g on whitebait and surf poppers.
Apollo Bay harbour has King George whiting to 42cm, and Lorne pier is producing salmon and barracouta.
In Port Phillip Bay, big calamari squid are being caught on baited jigs and prawn imitation jigs from Sorrento to Portsea and in Lonsdale Bight.
Smaller squid are being caught inshore from Mornington to Frankston and off Indented Head.
Salmon that have moved into the Point Nepean area are being caught with trolled, skirted jigs.
Snapper is reported at Carrum, Aspendale, Indented Head, Clifton Springs, Point Richards and Portarlington.
Best fish reported weighed 7kg, with the average 3-4kg.
King George whiting to 40cm are being caught from Indented Head, St Leonards and Queenscliff, with most fish taking pipi, mussel and squid.
In South Gippsland, Western Port has King George whiting being caught on the Tortoise Head bank on pipi and squid.
Snapper to 3kg have been caught off Cowes in small numbers.
Seven-gill sharks to 50kg are being caught off Corinella and Merricks. Gummy sharks to 7kg are also about.
In the Gippsland Lakes, Lake Tyers has fired up for bream to 40cm on hard-bodied lures, and dusky flathead to 4.6kg on soft plastic lures and prawn.
