FEDERAL parliament has rejected an opposition call to give $50 million to people hurt by the water crisis in South Australia's Coorong and Lower Lakes.
The coalition amendment to water legislation would have offered immediate financial assistance to affected communities, small businesses, tourism operators and the fishing industry.Environment Minister Peter Garrett said the government had already provided about $200 million to the South Australian state government towards a solution in the Lower Lakes and the Coorong.
"As well, $120 million for piping works to connect towns, communities and irrigators currently relying on the Lower Lakes to a higher point in the Murray,'' he told parliament.
"Those opposite might not be aware of these commitments given that there is an amendment to the motion moved by the opposition given to provide just $50 million to the Lower Lakes and Coorong.''
The House of Representatives voted 78 to 59 against the amendment. Two independent MPs voted with Labor.
Debate on the Water Amendment Bill was adjourned.
