ANGLERS looking for trout have plenty of options, while Port Phillip Bay's annual snapper run continues to frustrate anglers.

Geoff Lacey says Mt Beauty Pondage is producing rainbow trout to 550g on worms under a bubble float, and the Kiewa River has plentiful rainbow and brown trout to 1kg, being caught on worms and lures.

Rocky Valley Reservoir is providing excellent conditions for rainbow trout to 650g, while the Ovens River at Bright has brown trout to 400g being caught on bait.

Upper Mitta Mitta River from above Anglers Rest to Taylors Crossing, near Benambra, is producing brown trout to 1kg.

The Bundarra River at Anglers Rest has brown trout to 400g.

The Victoria River at Dinner Plain, near Mt Hotham, has settled down to an early summer level and is producing brown trout to about 450-500g.

At Lake Eildon, Mick Hall says yellowbelly, rainbow and brown trout are being caught.

A 5.5kg yellowbelly was caught on a yabbie fished from the shore this week. Most trout are to about 1.2kg and being caught on lures trolled at about 8m deep, and on Powerbait.

Eildon Pondage is producing brown and rainbow trout from 300g to 2.5kg on mudeyes, maggots and Powerbait.

Along the Murray River, Rod Mackenzie says yellowbelly have been biting well from Mildura to Swan Hill.

The best water is the Wakool River at Kyalite, which is producing yellowbelly to 3kg.

In the Western District, Doug Lucas reports shore anglers at Lake Bullen Merri are catching brown trout to 3kg and rainbow trout to 1.5kg on gudgeon and Powerbait.

Anglers using downrigger trolling techniques are catching brown trout to 3.6kg and chinook salmon to 2.2kg.

Doug says Port Campbell pier is producing silver trevally to 2kg and large squid.

The Hopkins River at Warrnambool has estuary perch being caught on lures.

The Curdies River at Curdie Vale is producing bream to 35cm on shrimp. Bream to 34cm are taking shrimp in the lower reaches of the Gellibrand River at Princetown.

In Port Phillip Bay, snapper reports are slow and widespread.

Reports this week are of fish from 3kg to 8.75kg off Mt Eliza, Mt Martha, Mornington, Carrum, Frankston, Indented Head and Portarlington.

King George whiting are in good numbers off St Leonards and from Fishermans Beach to Mt Martha.

Couta, snook and salmon are being caught along the inshore reefs off the eastern seaboard.

In South Gippsland, Western Port has been producing snapper to 6.5kg off Corinella, Joes Island, Lysaughts and Hastings, with fresh squid, pilchard and silver whiting yielding the best results. Gummy sharks to about 7kg, most 2-4kg, are being caught on squid.

In the Gippsland Lakes, the Mitchell River has bream to 30cm taking prawn at the butter factory wharf and Eagle Point.

In the Tambo River, bream to 40cm are being caught, while the Nicholson River is producing bream and garfish.

Hollands Landing has flathead in McLennan Strait taking bluebait, with bream and luderick caught on prawn.

At Lakes Entrance, garfish are being caught in the North Arm and silver trevally off the scallop wharf. Lake Tyers has luderick, bream to 40cm and silver trevally being caught on lures and prawn.

In East Gippsland, the Brodribb River at Marlo is producing mixed bags of bream, luderick, mullet and estuary perch.

Beaches are steady for salmon, flathead and tailor on bluebait, whitebait and silver lures.
