TROUT fishing in the alpine high country has been excellent, with good hatches of caddis moths around sundown resulting in better than pan-sized rainbow and brown trout.

Geoff Lacey reports Rocky Valley and Pretty Valley reservoirs are producing rainbow trout to 650g from shore.

The inflow streams to Lake Guy have brown trout to 400g being caught on lures and dry flies.

Mt Beauty Pondage is producing rainbow trout on lures and flies, while the Kiewa, Ovens, Victoria and Mitta Mitta rivers are flowing well and producing pan-sized to medium-sized trout.

The best bait to use continues to be scrubworms, although mudeyes are starting to show. Tassie devils and bibbed minnows are the most popular lures.

Dry flies in sizes 12-16, including Blue Dun, Red Humpy, Royal Wulff and Red Tag are bringing good results.

The Bundarra River is flowing clear and cold, with good reports of pan-sized brown trout being taken throughout the day on a variety of small dry flies, lures and to a lesser extent, with bait.

The dam wall at Lake Eildon has been producing yellowbelly to 4kg, Alaine Hall reports.

Yellowbelly and redfin are being caught in Fraser National Park on scrubworms and yabbies.

Rod Mackenzie says the Murray River is producing yellowbelly to 1.2kg at Swan Hill and Mildura, with most fish being caught on shrimp or small lures.

Lake Charm has good numbers of redfin to 1.4kg being caught on shrimp and minnow.

The Wakool River has yellowbelly taking shrimp and yabbies.

Mulloway are in the Glenelg River at Nelson. Neil Shelton says most are 6-8kg, with an 18kg fish caught recently. Live bait, squid and spew worms are working best.

In Port Phillip Bay, snapper to 7kg but averaging 2-3kg are being caught off Altona, Williamstown, Mt Eliza, Seaford, Carrum and Pt Richards to Pt Wilson. Pilchard, silver whiting and fresh squid are the best baits.

Salmon are in good numbers near Pt Nepean and being caught trolling skirted jigs.

Calamari squid to 2.5kg are taking baited jigs in Lonsdale Bight, while King George whiting to 45cm are being caught here below the Cottage by the Sea.

Western Port has a more consistent run of bigger snapper, with fish to 8kg caught off Corinella, Tooradin, Lysaughts.

In the Gippsland Lakes, Lakes Entrance has salmon, flathead and whiting being caught on pilchard, glassies and pipis.

Lake Tyers has bream being taken on peeled prawn and pilchard.

A few dusky flathead are being caught on soft plastic lures in the shallows near Burnt Bridge, while luderick are biting between No 2 Ramp and the Waterwheel Tavern.

In the Mitchell River, the best area is near the mouth and Backwater for bream to 1.3kg on spider crab.

The Tambo River has bream biting between the Highway Bridge and Lucerne Paddock on prawn and glassies.

Bream are also being caught from the jetties at Metung, and Hollands Landing has bream and flathead taking prawn in the Straits.

Marlo estuary system is producing mixed bags of bream, luderick, mullet and estuary perch.

The surf beaches are producing some good size salmon, tailor, flathead and gummy shark.

Bemm River has bream, luderick and trevally biting on soft plastic lures, peeled prawn and sandworm.

At Mallacoota Inlet, the Genoa and Wallagaraugh rivers are producing bream on local prawn.
