VICTORIA'S first harvest of genetically modified canola has been delivered to a silo in the state's southwest, via light plane.
Bacchus Marsh farmer Graham Dawson used a light plan to deliver a sample of his Roundup Ready crop to Tatyoon for testing.“It’s the quickest way to get the results, every minute counts when the weather is so unpredictable,” he said.
Mr Dawson said despite a lack of rain, the GM canola had performed better than Triazine Tolerant varieties.
“We only sprayed the crop once; we used a pre-emergent spray before we sowed then only one spray with Roundup Ready,” Mr Dawson said.
“The crop was clear with no weeds whatsoever.”
Mr Dawson said his crop yielded approximately 1 tonne to the hectare and 70 tonnes overall.
