FARMERS in East Gippsland are rejoicing after much needed soaking rain fell over paddocks and filled dams on the weekend.
Between 40mm and 160mm of rain was recorded in the district with most falling at Bairnsdale, Victoria, and in the high country regions of Buchan and Ensay.
Swifts Creek and Omeo also received welcome falls and areas between Sale and Yarram did too with most farmers now anticipating follow up rain forecast within the next week.
While the weather bureau had predicted major flooding for Gippsland, the worst did not eventuate with dry creeks, gullies and dams soaking up the moisture and leaving little to runoff.
Buchan producer Geoff Hodge received 160mm over three days but said there was no damage to bare hills.
"It is the best rain in one hit since 1998," he said.
"We were back to dirt here on the hills and I thought it would wash away but there has been no damage."
