SHOWERS have become the latest battleground in the fight to save water as the Victorian government moves to target wastage indoors.

From next Monday Melburnians will be urged to cap their water usage to 155 litres a day per person the equivalent of a bath tub full.

As a trade-off water restrictions will remain unchanged at level 3a saving gardens and sports grounds from drying out this summer.

The new targets will also save the nursery and car wash industries which would have suffered under stage four restrictions that ban all outdoor watering.

Spearheading the five-million-dollar campaign which includes information packs for every household and an advertising blitz is a push to get Melburnians to shorten their showers from seven to four minutes a saving of 42 litres.

The campaign has attracted criticism from a group protesting over plans to pipe up to 75 gigalitres a year from the Goulburn River to Melbourne.

Plug the Pipe member Jan Beer said Victorian Water Minister Tim Holding did not want to incur the anger of Melbourne voters by moving to Stage 4 restrictions.

Ms Beer said Bendigo and Ballarat were on Stage 4 restrictions despite tapping water from the Goulburn River.
