SYDNEY grain research company BRI Research Pty Ltd has won the tender to run the wheat classification system.

The system was previously administered by AWB (International) Limited prior to the abolition of the wheat single desk.

The Wheat Industry Expert Group set up by Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke recommended the Grains Research and Development Corporation take responsibility for the wheat classification system.

The GRDC decided to tender out the management of services required for the classification system.

GRDC managing director Peter Reading said BRI Research was selected to provide administrative services for the Variety Classification Panel.

Wheat classification categorises wheat varieties into grades based on processing and end-product quality.

The classification process helps to deliver grain of consistent physical quality, processing performance and end-product quality to customers and end-users.

BRI managing director Graham McMaster said his company had the experience and expertise to support the classification panel.
