FORMER AWB Limited director and NSW Farmers Association senior vice-president Xavier Martin has nominated for the board of Grain Growers Association.
Mr Martin will vie with current GGA chairman John Eastburn, regional committee members Andrew Carberry and Mark McKay and Queensland farmer Damien Scanlan for two positions on the company's board.An election will be held at the GGA annual meeting in Narrabri on February 20.
The current two Zone 1 positions on the board are held by Mr Eastburn and Rick Freeman.
Mr Freeman retires after nearly 22 years as a director of GGA and its predecessor Prime Wheat Association Ltd.
Mr Martin is the most high profile of the five candidates standing for the GGA board.
He lost his position on the AWB board during the recent restructure of the company.
He is a director of Plant Health Australia and former chairman of the NSWFA's grains committee.
Mr Eastburn was elected GGA chairman earlier this year when his predecessor Dan Mangelsdorf was deposed in a stoush over direction of the company.
Mr Scanlan stood for the board three years ago but lost to Mr Eastburn and Mr Freeman.
Mr Carberry, a farmer from Narrabri, has been a regional committee and former committee of advice member for a number of
years.
Mr McKay, from Warren, is a relative newcomer to the regional committee.
