SMALL Murray cod mixed with yellowbelly are dominating the Victorian catch along the Murray River from Swan Hill to Mildura, Rod Mackenzie says.

However, there are some bigger cod about, with fish to 4kg caught at Pental Island and Belsars Island.

The best cod reported weighed 15kg and was caught near Mildura. Most cod are being caught on yabbies, bardi grubs, cheese and lures.

Yellowbelly are taking cocktail baits with shrimp and worm or yabbie tail and worm combinations working well.

Lake Eildon is producing yellowbelly to 3kg and Mick Hall reports most are being caught on yabbie tails, spinnerbaits and minnow lures. Downrigger trolling is producing rainbow and brown trout.

Eildon Pondage has rainbow trout to 2kg being caught on dough, Powerbait and lures. Fly fishers in the Goulburn River are hooking rainbow trout to 700g on gold bead head nymphs on evening.

Top spots include McMartins Lane, the Breakaway and below Gilmores Bridge. The Rubicon River has small brown trout taking nymph pattern flies.

In the Western District, Doug Lucas says Lake Bullen Merri is quiet for rainbow trout to 900g caught downrigger trolling.

Lake Purrumbete has brown trout from one to 4kg, smaller rainbow trout and redfin to 600g being caught on gudgeon from Hoses Rocks. A few anglers with private boat access doing best.

Doug says the Hopkins River at Warrnambool is slow for bream on lures, and the Fitzroy River has bream to 28cm taking baits that include raw chicken and black yabbies.

Bream are in the lake section of the Curdies River and being caught on shrimp and greyback minnow. Clifton Beach has salmon to 800g and gummy sharks to 1.2m.

The Gellibrand River at Princetown has bream and mullet taking shrimp and yabbies in the estuary, and brown trout to 2.2kg being caught on lures in the freshwater.

The surf is firing for salmon from 900g to 1.2kg, and pinkies to 40cm at night.

Aire River estuary is producing bream to 44cm on shrimp and worm, the best results coming upstream from the Ford River to the Ocean Rd.

The surf has salmon to 1.5kg being caught on pilchard. At Apollo Bay, offshore anglers are catching sand flathead to 1.5kg, couta, pinkies and Morwong, with a few gummy and school sharks being caught in the deeper water.

There are squid in the harbour.

In Port Phillip Bay, Brett Torossi reports good catches of snapper are being taken along the eastern seaboard from Mornington to Chelsea in 15-22m of water.

He says there are many school fish in the 2-3kg sizes, but a few snapper between 4kg and 8kg also being caught.

On the western side of the bay, snapper to 5kg are coming from Indented Head around to Pt Richards.

Garfish are proving co-operative from piers at Seaford, Mordialloc, Frankston and Mornington.

In South Gippsland, Western Port has good numbers of snapper to 2kg off Rhyll and to 5kg caught off Corinella, the Western Entrance and Lysaughts.
