WESTERN District grain growers can get Southern Farming Systems' research results sooner for an extra fee.

The research group is offering a new service to farmers for yield and quality data from cereal and canola trials from the Inverleigh, Mininera and Dunkeld trial sites in Victoria.

The express results service allows farmers to make quicker decisions about which varieties to grow next year.

SFS members can pay $40 to get the express results, while non-members must pay $200.

The service was trialled for the first time last season for research results from the Inverleigh site.

Contact the SFS office on (03) 5229 0566 to subscribe for the express results service.

Research  forums

THE annual grains research update forums will be held at Wagga Wagga in southern NSW and Ballarat in Victoria in February.

Run by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, the updates are designed for agronomists, farm advisers, scientists and other grain industry specialists, although some leading farmers attend.

They include the latest research findings, covering a vast array of topics including crop diseases, soil health, fertiliser responses and new varieties.

The Wagga Wagga GRDC update will be held at Charles Sturt University on February 10 and 11, while the other will be held at Ballarat Lodge, Main Rd, Ballarat, on February 24 and 25.

The keynote speaker at the Wagga Wagga forum will be David Lamb, who heads the University of New England's precision agriculture research group.

At the Ballarat forum, US research agronomist John Shanahan will speak on using in-crop sensors to maximise nitrogen use efficiency.

Professor Shanahan works for the US Department of Agriculture at the University of Nebraska.
