AN INSURANCE task force has been set up to help people who have lost homes in the Victorian bushfires.

The Insurance Council of Australia said today it was too early to estimate the total bill and number of claims from the fires.

The death toll from the Victorian fires has reached 108, with 750 homes lost and more than 330,000ha burnt.

Insurance Council of Australia chief executive Kerrie Kelly said insurers already had call centres operating to help policy holders get the claims process underway quickly.

"As access to affected areas is opened, insurance assessors will be on the ground," Ms Kelly said in a statement.

"At this stage it is too early to provide an estimate for the expected insurable recovery cost.

"The Insurance Council has established an insurance task force and is working closely with the Victorian Government as well as the Master Builders Association in order to start the rebuilding process as soon as possible."

The Insurance Council said policy holders should not be concerned if insurance documents had been lost or damaged in the fires as insurance companies kept electronic records.
