THE Federal Government says relief funding for victims of Victoria's bushfires won't be tied to its $42 billion economic stimulus package.

Story #4318Prime Minister Kevin Rudd told Parliament yesterday state and local governments could access the package for the rebuilding of housing and infrastructure damaged in the fires.

That sparked opposition concerns the government was linking bushfire relief to contentious legislation presently before parliament.

Community Services Minister Jenny Macklin has told ABC radio today federal relief funding will be uncapped and not tied to the stimulus package legislation.

But she says it's commonsense that if the package does go through parliament this week, some of the money could be used by the Victorian government to rebuild schools for example.
