THE fight to control Victoria's bushfires has turned into a battle to hold hard-won ground ahead of horror bushfire conditions predicted for tomorrow.

Five fires are burning out of control .. almost three weeks after the firestorms that killed at least 210 lives and burned out thousands of houses and hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest and farmland.

Firefighters made the most of cooler temperatures and light rain in some areas yesterday, with the weather expected to hit the 30s today and the low 40s in some districts tomorrow, with gusty northwesterly winds.

Fires burning close to houses outside Daylesford in central Victoria and Upwey to Melbourne's east have been contained with backburning and control line construction continuing overnight.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment says residents in high-risk areas are warned to decide early tomorrow whether to stay and defend their homes or get out.
