PHILLIP Island has vehemently rejected the Victorian Country Football League's recommendation that it move from the Alberton Football League.
Club president Noel Burrell said he was "less than impressed" with the VCFL's suggestion that the Bulldogs switch to the Casey Cardinia division of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League next year.
The recommendation was made in the VCFL's review into football in South Gippsland, released last month.
The review was set up to placate warring Alberton league clubs, after Yarram forfeited its matches against competition heavyweight Wonthaggi Power in May last year.
Burrell said the suggestion that Phillip Island move to a major league was "completely out of left field".
"We're happy in the Alberton league and we're not going anywhere, so the answer to the VCFL is categorically no," he said.
Burrell said he had spoken to a number of Alberton club presidents, most of whom supported the Bulldogs remaining in the minor competition.
"Some of them are a bit concerned about our juniors because they're pretty good at the moment, but that could soon change."
VCFL chief executive Glenn Scott said the recommendation was based on Phillip Island's growing population and its proximity to Melbourne.
"They can't help where they're located, but it does pose a reasonable imbalance to clubs at the eastern end of the Alberton league in regards to attracting players from Melbourne," Scott said.
The review also recommends that Wonthaggi join the West Gippsland Latrobe league next season, after the VCFL won its three-year battle to evict the club from the Alberton league in January. But Wonthaggi officials have indicated they would prefer a move to the Casey Cardinia league.
The review recommendations also lack the support of Casey Cardinia clubs, according to Mornington Peninsula Nepean league operations manager Ian Benson.
"The Casey Cardinia clubs met on March 18 (and) the consensus was that . . . Wonthaggi would be a better option over the VCFL recommendation that Phillip Island transfer to Casey Cardinia," Mr Benson said.
Mr Scott said the VCFL hoped Wonthaggi would choose the West Gippsland Latrobe league as it was "still a country footy club in a country footy town".
"From my point of view I'd like to see them stay in the rural and regional part of country footy," he said.
