THE first Chinese car brand has gone on sale in Australia as a ute.

Great Wall Motors, to be known here as GWM, has launched three budget priced twin-cab utes, one with four-wheel drive.

The model known as the SA220, a 2.2-litre petrol two-wheel drive, is priced at $19,990.

The other two, known as V240, are a 2.4-litre petrol 2WD priced at $23,990 and the 4WD version at $26,990.Standard equipment includes air conditioning, alloy wheels, leather seats, electric windows and a three year/100,000km warranty.

Known as the Sailor in China, the GWM ute looks like a previous generation Holden Rodeo with Nissan Navara headlights.

The GWM range will be imported and distributed through a network of 45 dealers appointed by Sydney-based Ateco Automotive, which also handles Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Ferrari, Fiat and Maserati.

Ateco managing director, Ric Hull said the company had been negotiating with GWM for more than three years.

"The GWM double-cab ute will be just the start,'' Mr Hull said.It will be followed by a 4WD SUV to be known as the Hover within six months and a range of passenger cars next year.
