WEST Gippsland Latrobe is shaping as the most even league in country Victoria this season.
Seven of the competition's nine teams is boasting four or more wins after 10 rounds of football.
Moe, coached by former North Melbourne player Troy Makepeace, is on top of the ladder for just the fourth time since the Latrobe Valley Football League formed in 1954.
Recent powerhouse Maffra sits third, while last year's premier Sale is languishing near the bottom of the ladder with just two wins.
But it's Traralgon that has piqued the interest of punters in recent rounds, with 100-plus point victories in its past three matches.
The Maroons sit second on the ladder and are the only team to have won five consecutive games this season.
The Hazelman brothers, Brad and senior coach Steve, have spearheaded Traralgon's resurgence this season after the club finished outside the finals for the past two years.
Coach Hazelman, who has returned to his former club after stints coaching Belconnen in the ACT and Gormandale in the North Gippsland league, said the Maroons endured a shaky start to the year after seven new players joined the list.
"Early in the year Maffra beat us and Moe beat us by 20-odd, and we've got those two (teams) again in the next few weeks," he said.
"They've improved a fair bit but I think we're much better side than earlier in the year and hopefully we can return the favour."
Despite being named in the best in three of his seven matches this season, Hazelman said a lingering knee injury sustained in a practice match had restricted his ability to train and maintain fitness.
Brother Brad, who returned to the Maroons this year after coaching Shepparton United, has also overcome niggling injuries to recapture top form in recent weeks.
"Brad had injuries at the start of the year, but his last month has been really good and he's back to 100 per cent," Hazelman said.
"He's been playing half-forward flank and on the ball . . . he's coached before, people just needed to learn how he plays and he had to learn how they play."
Hazelman said Michael Geary had been a shining light for the Maroons, along with full-forward Tim Aitken, who has kicked 24 goals in three weeks.
Former Traralgon premiership star Tom McQualter, who has returned from a flag with Mid Gippsland club Yinnar, has also been a stand-out.
Hazelman said this week's match against third-placed Maffra loomed as a serious test for the Maroons, but admitted ladder leader Moe was the side to beat in an even competition.
