GENTLE rain kept the bids flowing at Colac today where sappy spring weaner steers made to 223c/kg in the bi-monthly sale.

Yard numbers were less than advertised at 670 head with most producers already having offloaded what stock they could prior to winter in a bid to conserve feed during the ongoing dry conditions.

Rainfall in most of East and central Gippsland is well below average for this time of year and the stock on offer today were in lighter condition, reflecting the tough climate.

Grown steers sold to $950 a head and made up to 166c/kg liveweight, while weaner steers made up to $684 or an estimated 202c/kg.

In the heifer sale, weaners reached $475 or about 180c/kg, and cows and calves made to $890.

Cattle sold to South Australia and Queensland, Shepparton, South Gippsland and to Orbost in far East Gippsland.
