WITH only 90 days until the next bushfire season, few changes have been made to prevent another tragedy, according to the Victorian Lands Alliance.

Two public meetings in eastern Victoria last week heard that more people would die from bushfires in future because the lessons to reduce fuel loads had not been learned.

VLA secretary Max Rheese said that despite political promises after the disastrous February fires to increase fuel reduction burning, this year's burn targets had not changed.

"This year's Department of Sustainability and Environment burn targets, as indicated in the Budget papers, are the same as the last four years - 130,000ha," Mr Rheese said.

The target falls significantly short of the state's bushfire inquiry recommendations to triple the amount of prescribed burning to 385,000ha a year.

The No Fuel No Fire meetings at Cann River and Pakenham were part of a series held around the state.

DSE Gippsland chief fire officer David Tainsh admitted there had been shortfalls to fuel reduction targets in the past and said more burning needed to be achieved in coming years.
