IT'S not every day you see a woman pick up an axe to chop wood.
For Adele Deverill, from Newham, in Victoria's Macedon Ranges, doing exactly this saw her win the 275mm Ladies Underhand Handicap Woodchopping Championship at the Royal Melbourne Show last week.
Adele, 20, who has been chopping wood for the past eight years, said it was a "pretty good feeling" to win the award.
Following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, she is a fourth-generation woodchopper in the Deverill family, albeit the first female.
"It's pretty social sport and a good family thing to do," Adele said.
"It keeps you pretty fit and you've always got someone to chop the firewood."
Adele walked away with a cash prize of $480 and a big sash declaring her winner on the day.
