IT'S time to sow parsnip seeds into a well-cultivated, open soil.
Parsnips are a tasty, nutty and sweet root vegetable that is great for winter stews, soups and roasts.
However, they can take four to six months to mature, so put in fresh seed now.
Parsnip seeds do not keep well so start with a fresh batch every season.
They also take a long time to germinate, so don't despair; just keep the rows weeded as they grow.
Hollow crown is an old variety, having been around since 1820 and is the one of the tastiest parsnips.
Beetroot and carrots can also be sown from seed now and as for parsnips, need to be weeded regularly to reduce competition.
Thin as necessary so that seedlings are about 10cm apart.
