- Slow Cooker: Easy and delicious recipes for all seasons by Sally Wise. ABC Books. $24.99
Slow cooking is about time and preparation - a rule of thumb is the longer the cooking time the better.
As such, the humble 1970s crock pot is central to Wise's recipes.
She gives much necessary information to the uninitiated regarding slow cooking generally and using crock pots specifically. There are tips aplenty and facts too, not least that a crock pot on all day slowly cooking costs a few cents to run.
The recipes here are perfect for busy people. All are made from common, everyday ingredients and take a few moments to prepare for pleasing results.
Minestrone and the curiously named, Subterfuge soup, sits comfortably beside Parsnip and Blue Cheese soup.
For main meals, perhaps Beef Goulash with Herb Dumplings, Lemon Roast Chicken and the simply named but adventurous Lamb with Apricots and Rosemary appeals?
The section on desserts rounds out the book with some mouth watering offerings.
The simple approach and the familiarity of ingredients make this book a fine kitchen companion with not much toil and certainly no trouble to use.
