PEUGEOT has added a zero to its familiar 407 nameplate and attached it to an SUV.

The 4007 is the French maker's first high-riding, all-wheel drive, five or seven-seater.

A joint effort with Mitsubishi, the 4007 is based on the Outlander and is built in Japan.

It is powered by a new Peugeot 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine producing 115 kW at 4000rpm and 380Nm of torque at 2000rpm.

Peugeot says with 250Nm available from just 1250rpm and 300Nm from 1500rpm, the 4007 reaches 100km/h in 9.9 seconds in the manual and 12.5 seconds in the automatic.

The transmission is either a six-speed manual or a six-speed Getrag direct-shift gearbox each driving through a Mitsubishi-developed three-mode drive system that offers a choice of two-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive with centre diff lock.

Peugeot claims a combined fuel consumption in the manual of 7 litres/100km and carbon dioxide emissions of 191g/km (auto 7.3 and 192).

There are two trim levels - ST and SV.

The five-seat ST manual is $45,490 and has 16-inch alloy wheels, six airbags, stability control, cruise control, rear parking sensors, climate control, cloth-leatherette trim. Automatic adds $2500.

The seven-seat automatic ST is $49,190.

The SV auto is $54,190 and adds 18-inch wheels, leather trim, heated front seats, electric driver's seat, xenon headlights, privacy glass and chrome door sill kick plates and window surrounds.

Braked towing capacity is 2000kg.

Mitsubishi will release a face-lifted Outlander this month. It also has plans to release a diesel Outlander but not until it has a Mitsubishi engine.
