BOYD Exell is the new German Four-In-Hand Driving Master after winning the second league of the FEI World Cup Driving qualifiers in Germany on Saturday.

The British-based Australian, who is from Bega, was simply the best at the second competition of the 2009-10 FEI World Cup Driving season in the Schlelyer Halle arena.

Dutch drivers Koos de Ronde and IJsbrand Chardon tried their best, but were unable to prevent Exell's impressive win.

Two fantastic laps of the course in the Hanns Martin Schleyer Halle on Saturday afternoon gave Exell, affectionately know as Mr XL, the win in the Schenker German Master.

The win earned him $12,000 in prize money.

Having already finished first in Hanover at the end of October, the 37-year-old has now won the first two rounds of the FEI World Cup Driving for 2009-10.

"I've been second a couple of times here," a delighted Exell said.

The president of the Equestrian Federation of Australia, Paul Cargill, was in Stuttgart and was thrilled with the result.

"We in Australia are all very proud of Boyd," he said.

In second place was the 2008 team world champion Koos de Ronde from Holland.

Last year's dominant driver, the double world champion Ijsbrand Chardon, also from Holland, was third.

With two victories in hand Exell is looking untouchable for defending his 2008 title.

Exell said the key to his success was his "experienced and careful" horses.

"With the new, experienced horse Spitfire, which I bought from German four-in-hand driver Max Dangel and Bill, the former horse of Christoph Sandmann and Michael Freund, I have a perfect set of leader horses," he said.

He said his wheelers were the "real heroes" of his team.

"They are even more careful and powerful.

"My horses need to be worked well before I start the competition - the more tired they are, the better they go.

"And when I don't push them and just let them run, they open their strides out and go even faster."

Exell now leads the world ranking, at 20 points ahead of Dutch driver Koos De Ronde on 14.

The next qualifier will be held at Olympia in London, the week before Christmas.
