FACED with an unusual predicament, Elders Wycheproof was today forced to postpone the sale of 15,000 first-cross and Merino sheep.

After heavy rain over the weekend, the agency called the sale off due to difficult and potentially unsafe working conditions in the yards and loading ramps.

Kevin Thompson of Elders Wycheproof described the situation as "unique''.

"We've decided to postpone the sale until December 9 due to excessive rain; it's not so much the rain we've had overnight, but the 25 to 60 millimetres across the district last weekend.

"It's just got too wet to manage the sheep, which is a unique problem in recent times.''

Mr Thompson said the muddy conditions had made it impossible to do the stock justice in preparation for sale and created concerns about the safety of loading and transporting stock.

"After speaking with most of the forwarding agents and their clients, we've decided this is the best decision.''
