MURRAY cod season opened yesterday in Victoria and NSW.
And the Cod Classic will be held at Lake Mulwala on December 5-6.
Rod Mackenzie reports Kangaroo Lake is producing legal-size Murray cod and redfin and the Murray River below Robinvale has yellowbelly to 1kg taking spinnerbaits.
Gazza, at Eildon Bait and Tackle, says Lake Eildon continues to fish well for yellowbelly and Murray cod in the Delatite Arm, with yabbies fished close to shore, and Stumpjumper lures trolled through dead timber.
Eildon Pondage has rainbow trout to about 1kg being caught on Powerbait.
Fisheries Victoria has released about 1000 brown and rainbow trout weighing from 1kg to 4kg into the Goulburn River.
The river has produced brown trout to 3kg and rainbow trout to 750g on pink Powerbait, Tassie Devil lures and Pheasant Tail Nymph flies.
In East Gippsland, Mallacoota Inlet has dusky flathead taking soft plastic lures, luderick biting on weed and bream on prawn and lures in the Top Lake.
Bemm River has bream in good numbers taking sandworm and vibe lures.
The estuary at Marlo has bream, estuary perch and luderick biting on sandworm and lures, and the beaches are producing gummy sharks and salmon on squid and bluebait.
In the Gippsland Lakes, at Paynesville, prawns are running and bream are being caught at night in the Strait on sandworm.
Metung has bream, silver trevally and salmon from the boardwalk and jetties on prawn and whitebait.
The Mitchell, Tambo and Nicholson rivers are yielding bream on Vibe lures, sandworm and prawns.
Hollands Landing has salmon at the boat ramp on sandworm, with bream taking prawn at Tom's Creek.
At Lakes Entrance, the scallop wharf is producing silver trevally on pilchard strips, and King George whiting, salmon and flathead on prawn and pipi.
In Western Port, snapper to 5kg is being caught on pilchards and squid. King George whiting to 46cm are being caught off Balnarring, and to 36cm along the Middle Spit and Tortoise Head Bank.
Brett Terossi reports snapper are in good numbers off Frankston, Carrum, Seaford, Mt Eliza and Mornington.
Good reports have also come from Werribee, Pt Richards and Indented Head. Most fish are to about 4.5kg and being caught on pilchards, silver whiting, squid and garfish.
Calamari squid to 2kg are being caught on baited jigs in the Lonsdale Bight at Queenscliff and off Portsea.
Frankston pier has salmon to 1.5kg being caught on lures and bait.
Large Garfish are being caught off piers from Rye to Seaford.
Mick Kaksa reports good numbers of bream to 1.8kg are biting on freshwater yabbies in the Maribyrnong River. King George whiting are being caught off Wedge Spit near Little River.
In the southwest, Bob McPherson says the Lee Breakwater at Portland is fishing well for snapper to 8kg, calamari squid and King George whiting.
