NEW Holland's T7070 Auto Command has won the title of Tractor of the Year at the annual Agritechnica expo held in Hanover, Germany, earlier this month.

The Auto Command tractor, which features a host of high-end specifications, such as a continuously variable transmission, also won the Golden Tractor for Design award, which acknowledges excellence in design and operator comfort.

The 7070 Auto Command was first seen in Australia at the Henty Field Days in September.

The Tractor of the Year title is awarded at Agritechnica by a panel of 20 journalists from various agricultural publications in Europe.

The T7070 is assembled in New Holland's Basildon facility, in the UK, and there are five models in the T7000 Auto Command series, with engine power ranging from 124kW to 168kW.

The engines can run on 100 per cent biodiesel fuel and the tractors' new-generation Auto Command continuously variable transmission was developed at the New Holland's Research Centre in Modena, Italy.

The transmission is manufactured in New Holland's Antwerp plant in Belgium.

A feature of the tractor's interior is the SideWinder console, which allows the driver to control most of the tractor's functions from the armrest on the right-hand side of the seat.

The SideWinder incorporates a specially designed control lever and monitor with touchscreen display.

The monitor is used for implement control as well as autoguidance, an industry first according to New Holland.

The T7070 can achieve a top speed of 50km/h and the tractor can be shuttled between forward and reverse direction using a joystick or a switch on the dashboard.

The braking system has a combination of an electronic park brake and New Holland's Active StopStart system.
