CANOLA growers in the Murchison area have claimed a victory, with GrainCorp reversing a decision to designate their silo as a receival site solely for genetically modified canola.
Members of the Murchison East silo committee, who grow non-GM canola, told The Weekly Times last month that they would face a $7 per tonne penalty to deliver their canola into the GM bin.
Their alternative was to deliver to Dookie or Elmore, which are further from port and would have lead to higher freight rates.
The farmers argued that there was little GM canola grown in the Murchison East catchment and non-GM farmers were being penalised by the decision.
GM canola was attracting a discount of $10 to non-GM canola on Monday.
GrainCorp reversed its decision and allowed both non-GM and GM canola to be binned separately at the site.
Silo committee president Brian Burke said 4000 tonnes of conventional canola and 1000 tonnes of GM canola was received at the site.
"It was a good win," Mr Burke said.
