COOLANA Angus plans to move into the South Australian market, following the dispersal of Willalooka Basin last week.
Coolana, which has its bull breeding unit based at Chatsworth and a commercial property at Meningie in South Australia, bought 32 mixed age Willalooka-type cows for an average $2343.
Principal Mark Gubbins said the cows were a good opportunity to buy.
Coolana will hold its first South Australian bull sale on February 17, in the twilight after the final Willalooka Basin bull sale, at Padthaway.
"The Willalooka cows were close to breed average and also classed by Dick Whale, as our herd is," Mr Gubbins said.
"It was a great opportunity to get into some families I don't have already.
"They were going down a similar breed direction and I knew how they had been classed so had confidence in the type of cattle we bought."
Coolana aim to offer about 50 bulls at Padthaway next year, to "test out" the South Australian market.
"We've got the bulls to do it, so you have to stand up at some point and have a go.
"We've been looking at the situation for a while, and decided that now, with Willalooka Basin going, and Noranda recently, it is time to jump."
