LONDON - BRITISH farm groups have hit out at a government-funded report calling for a 30 per cent drop in meat consumption to help combat climate change.

The Country Land and Business Association said the call, made in a study published in the health journal, The Lancet, was "misguided" and "would only create other problems".

New EU ag man

BRUSSELS - FORMER Romanian Agriculture Minister Dacian Ciolos has been nominated as the next European Union agriculture commissioner in Brussels, and is expected to take up the office by the end of this month.

The nomination, by EU Commission president Manuel Barroso, ends months of speculation on who would replace Mariann Fischer Boel when the current team of 27 commissioners completes its term.

Flood fodder

DUBLIN - THE Irish Farmers' Association has continued organising fodder drops to the farmers who were worst hit by last month's floods.

Last week, the IFA organised three drops of feed to Gort, Ballinasloe and Banagher for farmers in urgent need of fodder.

German rescue

BRUSSELS - THE European Union has authorised Germany to provide grants of up to $24,600 to farmers "who encounter difficulties as a result of the current economic crisis".

The aid package will be offered to farmers until December 31 next year in the form of direct grants, interest rate subsidies, subsidised loans and subsidised guarantees.
