RECORD lambing percentages have resulted in 1.7 million more lambs hitting the ground in New Zealand this year.

The result is a 6.2 per cent increase from the severely drought-affected levels of last year, according to Meat and Wool New Zealand.

MWNZ said the country's flock flock numbers have reached almost 29 million, up from a 51-year low recorded last year.

MWNZ economic service director Rob Davison said this year's lambing percentage, of 124 lambs born per 100 ewes, was a record for New Zealand and well up on last spring, when 113 lambs were born per 100 ewes.
