VICTORIAN households have been urged to help tackle the increased threat from the notorious Queensland fruit fly this summer.
Department of Primary Industries co-ordinator, Lyn Jacka, from Mildura, said people could help keep Sunraysia free of fruit fly by properly maintaining backyard fruit trees, removing any fallen or unwanted fruit - including tomatoes and capsicums - and not carrying produce into the pest-free area when they visit.
"The main consequence of a fruit fly outbreak would be the loss of essential markets for local fruit growers," she said.
