DIRTY water slowed the Murray cod fishing at the annual Cod Classic at Lake Mulwala last weekend.
Rod Mackenzie reports cod to about 1m and yellowbelly to 55cm weighed in. Fluoro-coloured lures, spinnerbaits, cheese, shrimp and bardi grubs all accounted for fish.
Geoff Lacey at Mt Beauty says most alpine region rivers are holding good numbers of rainbow and brown trout, with many in the 650-900g weight range.
Rocky Valley Reservoir at Falls Creek is fishing well for rainbow trout with mudeyes under a bubble float and Tassie Devil lures doing well.
Pretty Valley Reservoir is excellent and the inflow stream, Pretty Valley Creek, is holding many large trout. The Kiewa River at Tawonga is producing trout in the late afternoons.
The Ovens River near Porepunkah is producing rainbow trout and some browns in the runs during the day and pools towards evening.
The upper Ovens River, from Harrietville to Germantown, is producing rainbow trout to 450g.
The Victoria River at Dinner Plain is fishing extremely well for rainbow trout to 750g.
The Upper Mitta Mitta, Cobungra and Bundarra rivers at Anglers Rest are fishing well for pan-size trout.
Gazza at Eildon Bait and Tackle reports Lake Eildon is producing yellowbelly to 7kg on yabbies near the dam wall.
Good numbers of Murray cod, many of them undersize, are taking Stumpjumper lures at Jerusalem Creek. Scrubworms fished under a float are attracting brown trout to 800g.
Eildon Pondage has rainbow trout to 700g being caught on Powerbait, mudeyes, pink Tassie Devil lures and Woolly Bugger flies.
The Goulburn River has rainbow trout being caught on drifted worms, lures and flies.
In the Western District, Doug Lucas says Lake Bullen Merri is experiencing a toxic algal bloom. Anglers are advised not to eat fish caught here.
Lake Purrumbete is producing brown trout to 2kg on clown-pattern Tassie Devil lures trolled at 6m.
On the saltwater scene, Doug says bream to 42cm are being caught on shrimp in the Curdies River.
Beaches at Clifton, Princetown and Johanna are producing gummy sharks to 15kg and salmon to 800g.
Brett Terossi reports that Port Phillip Bay's snapper run is going well along the eastern side. Snapper to 6kg are biting in 10-12m of water from Mt Eliza to Carrum at dawn and dusk, in 16m off Seaford and all hours from Mornington to Carrum in 19-21m. Best baits are pilchard, silver whiting, garfish and fresh squid.
Calamari squid to 2kg are taking baited jigs in the Lonsdale Bight and garfish are in good numbers on all piers from Brighton to Frankston and in Swan Bay.
In South Gippsland, Western Port has gummy sharks to 15kg being caught along the channel edges from Lysaughts to Tortoise Head.
Snapper to 8kg are being taken near Buoy 13; King George whiting to 38cm are being caught in the Eastern Channel on pipi and squid.
In the Gippsland Lakes, Lakes Entrance has been fishing well for King George whiting to 36cm, tailor, silver trevally, salmon and flathead. More bream and dusky flathead are starting to be caught at Lake Tyers on soft plastic lures.
In the Mitchell River, flathead to 65cm are taking lures near the river mouth.
The Tambo River is producing bream between the Highway Bridge and the Cliffs on sandworm and shrimp.
At Metung, large bream are biting on crab while silver trevally are taking whitebait.
Paynesville has flathead being caught on soft plastic lures in the Straits.
East Gippsland beaches at Marlo, Bemm River and Mallacoota are steady for salmon and tailor on bluebait and metal lures.
The Brodribb and Snowy rivers at Marlo are producing bream and estuary perch on live prawn and vibe lures.
At Bemm River, bream to about 1kg are biting on sandworm.
