CLAAS has boosted its tractor range with the launch of four mid-size Axos tractors.

Known as compact utility tractors, the Axos machines are powered by four-cylinder, 4.4-litre Perkins engines with mechanical fuel injection and twin valves per cylinder.

The four Axos tractors are designated 310, 320, 330 and 340 and have 55kW, 64kW, 68kW and 75kW engine power respectively.

The two larger power models feature intercoolers and exhaust gas recirculation, making them compliant with Tier 3-emission regulations.

Product manager Konstantin Blersch said the new Axos tractors were suited to mixed farming.

"The Axos tractors are ideal for livestock enterprises where the tractor has to perform as an all-rounder," Konstantin said.

"Not only are the engines efficient but the wheelbase 2.5m makes the tractors ideal for lugging and towing implements, even tillage work."

Each of the Axos tractors can be fitted with a front-end hitch and power take-off shaft if required and the rear of the tractor has a category two linkage.

The rear linkage lift capacity of the Axos 340 is 5100kg while the three other models can lift 3800kg at the rear end.

Hydraulic oil flow rate is rated at 60 litres a minute and two couplings are standard. There is an option to have three hydraulic couplings if required.

The Axos' pedigree comes from the Claas Celtis tractor and its looks are similar to the larger Claas Arion and Axion models.

There are three levels of specifications available for each of the models.

The basic "C" models have a mechanical two-range, 10 forward and 10 reverse gear transmission while the mid-range "CL" specification also has a Revershift, electric-hydraulic system for clutchless directional changes.

At the top of the specification tree is the "CX" version which is equipped with Claas Twinshift gear system.

The Twinshift uses a button-operated electric-hydraulic splitter to produce a 20 forward and 20 reverse gear.

The CX can also be fitted with a creeper gear range to make the tractor crawl at speeds as low as 400m an hour.
