ELMHURST Cricket Club is putting runs on the board once again, after more than a decade on the sidelines.
The tiny township of 300 people, between Avoca and Ararat, hasn't had a cricket team since the early 1990s, when dwindling player numbers forced the club to fold. But thanks to a determined publican, the club is back on the park -and on top of the ladder - in the Grampians Cricket Association C Grade competition.
"Other towns' teams were using our well-grassed oval, so it seemed a natural thing to get some of the boys together and create an outlet for them and a sporting group for the town," publican Mark Chapman said.
According to historic newspaper records, the club took to the pitch for the first time in 1873, making it one of the oldest cricket clubs in Victoria.
Seed suppliers Driscoll Seeds and Upper Murray Seeds helped kick-start Elmhurst's season with new uniforms.
