IN THE Victorian Alpine region, Geoff Lacey reports the Ovens River at Porepunkah and Harrietville is producing brown and rainbow trout to 4.5kg on worms.

The Victoria River at Dinner Plain has rainbow trout to 7.5kg taking Caddis flies. At Anglers Rest, the Bundarra and Cobungra Rivers are fishing well for pan-size brown and rainbow trout. The Lower Mitta Mitta River at Eskdale has good numbers of rainbow trout being caught on worms. Snowy Creek at Granite Flat has rainbow trout to about 4kg.

Along the Murray River, Rod Mackenzie says that lures are accounting for Murray cod to 1.1m and yellowbelly to 1.4kg at Wemen, and from Mildura and Wentworth. Smaller cod to about 65cm and yellowbelly to 1kg are in reasonable numbers at Pental Island, near Swan Hill. These fish are being hooked on bait including shrimp, scrubworm, bardi grub and cheese. Kangaroo Lake and Lake Charm are producing redfin to 1kg on minnow and shrimp.

Gary Constantine at Eildon Bait & Tackle says anglers trolling lures in the main arm of Lake Eildon are catching Murray cod to 3.5kg, yellowbelly to 2.8kg and brown trout to 1.4kg on lures trolled in the main arm. Anglers fishing with Powerbait near the boat ramps are hooking rainbow and brown trout to 8.5kg.

Eildon Pondage is at a good level and producing brown trout to 3.2kg on Powerbait and Pink Tassie Devil lures. In the Goulburn River, drifted worms and spinning with size 3.5 Stumpjumper lures is producing brown trout to 1.4kg.

In the Western District, Doug Lucas reports Lake Purrumbete has brown trout to 2kg being caught trolling Tassie Devil lures behind Ford Fenders at 6m deep. West Barwon Dam has mainly brown trout to 9kg taking worms and mudeyes fished under a float. Wurdiboluc Reservoir has brown and rainbow trout to 1.4kg being caught on lures and beetle pattern flies.

Doug says the lake section of the Curdies River at Peterborough has bream averaging about 34cm and being caught on shrimp. Aire River is producing bream to 42cm on freshwater yabbies.

Bob McPherson at Portland reports yellowtail kingfish to 9kg have shown up along the North Shore. Offshore anglers bottom bouncing in about 60m of water are hooking snapper, gummy sharks, morwong and flathead. Land based anglers fishing from the Lee Breakwater are doing well with snapper to 8.2kg and calamari squid being caught.

Neil Shelton at Nelson said the Glenelg River is experiencing a solid run of mulloway to 7kg, and they are being caught on live bait, lures and whitebait. Bream to 1.6kg also being caught on lures and diced pilchard.

In Port Phillip Bay, Michelle Torossi said snapper are being caught in a range of depths from 14m to 21m. Most fish are 2-3kg, but there are still good numbers of fish from 4 to 6.5kg being caught. Pilchard, silver whiting, garfish, squid and soft plastic lures producing results. Top areas include Frankston, Seaford, Mornington, Indented Head and Pt Richards. King George whiting from 40-50cm are being caught on squid, pipi and mussels in the Lonsdale Bight. Calamari squid to about 1kg are coming from Pelican Pt to Canadian Bay, and Mornington pier. Squid to 2kg are being caught from Portsea pier and the Lonsdale Bight. Garfish are plentiful from most piers and over the seagrass beds inshore. The mouth of Patterson River is producing salmon to about 6.5kg on silver lures.

Western Port has King George whiting, averaging 34-38cm, taking pipi, mussel and squid off Yuringa. Snapper continue to be the main story and fish to 9.3kg are being caught. Top areas include Corinella, Silver Leaves, Rhyll, Cowers and Middle Spit. Yellowtail scad, pilchard and squid bait producing results.

In the Gippsland Lakes, the Mitchell River has flathead at Eagle Point and bream in the Backwater.
