BIG Murray cod have been slow along the Murray River, according to Rod Mackenzie.
He reports cod to 61cm and yellowbelly to 40cm are being caught at Pental Island, near Swan Hill, on yabbies. The biggest cod reported was a 1.1m fish caught at Boundary Bend.
Stony Crossing on the Wakool River has Murray cod from 3kg to 12kg and yellowbelly to 1kg. Baits to use include bardi grubs, cheese, shrimp and scrubworms.
Yellowbelly are also taking blade lures. Shrimp baits are doing best in Merran Creek for cod to 11kg and yellowbelly to 2kg. The Edward River has large numbers of small cod mixed in with some bigger fish.
Redfin to 500g are being caught on shrimp, minnow and whitebait at Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake.
Gary Constantine, at Eildon, says Lake Eildon is producing good numbers of trout, Murray cod, redfin and yellowbelly.
Eildon Pondage is producing rainbow trout to 2.4kg and brown trout to 3kg. Best bait has been Powerbait.
Mt Beauty Pondage is producing rainbow trout to 800g on worms, reports Geoff Lacey, at Tawonga. The Kiewa River from Mt Beauty to Mongans Bridge is producing both rainbow and brown trout to 450g, and the occasional bigger fish.
The Ovens River at Bright has mainly rainbow trout to 500g on worms and lures and the Upper Mitta Mitta River above Glen Wills has rainbow and brown trout to about 500g.
Chris Hall, at Portland, says the Lee Breakwater is producing snapper to 7.5kg, mostly 2-3kg, King George whiting to 45cm and calamari squid.
The North Shore is yielding bronze whaler sharks, mulloway to 9kg, silver trevally to 2kg, snapper to 3kg and yellowtail kingfish to 9kg.
Doug Lucas, in the Western District, says Lake Purrumbete is producing rainbow trout from 900g to 1.2kg.
Lake Bullen Merri has a severe algal bloom and should be avoided. Mt Emu Creek near Panmure is fishing well for brown trout from 600g to 2.5kg and West Barwon Dam is producing rainbow trout to 1.4kg.
In the salt water, Doug says the Curdies River near Peterborough has bream averaging about 34cm in the lake section being caught on shrimp and greyback minnow.
Aire River is fishing well for bream, with fish to 32cm being caught below the old bridge on hard body lures, earthworms, shrimp and prawns and to 40cm upstream of the bridge.
Beaches from Aire River to Peterborough are producing salmon to 600g and gummy sharks to about 14kg.
In Port Phillip Bay, Michelle Torossi reports snapper have slowed. They are averaging 2- 3kg, with some bigger fish to 4kg and best reports coming from anglers fishing about 20m off Frankston and Carrum.
King George whiting catches have been reported at Mt Eliza, Mornington, Fishermans Beach, Indented Head, and Clifton Springs. In Western Port, snapper from 2-8kg were reported from Corinella, Silver Leaves, Tankerton and the north end of Middle Spit. Best baits are squid, pilchard and salmon. King George whiting to 44cm are being caught off Flinders, Balnarring, Tankerton and the Tyabb Bank on pipi and squid.
In the Gippsland Lakes, the Mitchell River has produced good numbers of bream.
The Tambo River has bream biting on sandworm and prawn from Rough Road to the mouth, and the Highway Bridge on the Nicholson is producing bream.
At Metung, King George Whiting are biting off Shaving Point on pipi and bream are being caught from the boardwalk.
The Reeve Channel at Lakes Entrance is producing flathead, King George whiting and salmon, while Lake Tyers has tailor and bream.
In East Gippsland, the estuary system at Marlo is producing bream to 42cm and luderick to 1.92kg on crab and sandworm.
Bemm River has bream to 1kg and dusky flathead biting on soft plastic and vibe lures.
The Bottom Lake at Mallacoota Inlet has bream and flathead biting on prawn and soft plastic lures.
