MILDURA agribusiness company Tandou paid $1800 a megalitre for 3091 megalitres of high-reliability Murray River entitlement last week.

The purchase was part of Tandou's strategy to become a water trading house.

The price is well below the $2200-$2400 a megalitre the Federal Government has paid for Murray River high-reliability entitlement during the past 12 months.

Tandou managing director Guy Kingwill said the purchase was part of the company's strategy to build on its portfolio of water assets.

"Given the current value opportunities in the Victorian water market, this acquisition of high reliability entitlement further expand's Tandou's existing water holdings within the Murray-connected system," Mr Kingwill said.

Tandou is among a growing list of cashed-up agribusiness companies who sold their low-reliability water to the Federal Government last season and are now back in the market buying higher-reliability water.
