FIRST-cross ewes sold to a top of $194 and ewe lambs to $171 at Kyneton today.

"It was a very solid sale, particularly for the first-cross ewe lambs" said Greg Dwyer of the Kyneton agency Landmark-Dwyer.

The feature Kyneton sale attracted a yarding of 12,750 head - including nearly 3000 2008-drop ewes, and more than 7000 ewe lambs.

Max Robinson of Woodend topped the sale with a pen 448 Border Leicester-Merino August-September drop, November shorn ewes at $194.

These were ewes he bought as lambs from Young in late 2008.

Don Younger of Morundah, NSW,  was also to the fore with $192 for a pen of 254 November shorn ewes which had been on agistment at Kyneton.

Once off the top ewes, the middle to lower quality 2008-drop ewes sold from $130-$160.

Julian Laffan from Moama, NSW topped the ewe lamb pens at $171 for 170 April-May drop lambs from Charinga ewes by Superborder rams.

First-cross ewe specialist breeder Hedley Lourie of Raywood was also pleased to receive $160 for a pen of 229 May-drop lambs.

These were lambs he had held over from the Bendigo pre-Christmas sales.

Joinable ewe lambs sold upwards of $120.Lighter ewes lambs which would have to be held back for a later joining or grown out for another year, sold from $80-$120, or about $10 - $20 above prime market values.

Most of the Kyneton sheep sold locally, although several pens were booked to Ballarat prime lamb breeders, while another 500 were bought for East Gippsland.
