THOUSANDS of people gathered at Boisdale, north of Maffra, to celebrate mountain cattlemen's heritage at the weekend.

More than 4000 people from across Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia attended the 36th annual Mountain Cattlemen's Get Together.

Neil Waite, from Wymah, in southern NSW, took home the Cattlemen's Cup while Marika Angove, 16, from Harcourt, won the Junior Cattlemen's Cup.

Marika attended her first Get Together to compete in 2008 but couldn't take part in the Junior Cattlemen's Cup because she did not have a safety vest.

She returned last year to compete and came third.

She said it was a great feeling to win.

"I'm so proud of my horse, he was amazing," Marika said.

"I'm so happy to have won and I can't wait to go back next year."

Get Together coordinator Ben Treasure said the weekend had been "an absolute success".

"It's held every year to celebrate mountain cattlemen's heritage and culture and to catch up with old friends," Mr Treasure said.

"It's also to talk about how we can assist getting cattle grazing back.

"It was a really impressive, strong turnout, especially considering the heat."

The 2011 Mountain Cattlemen's Get Together is scheduled to be held on January 7-9 in the Omeo region of Victoria.
